Process is described whereby the hemicellulose component of bagasse is extracted by means of dilute sulphuric acid hydrolysis. A liquor containing significant quantities of xylose, glucose, arabinose and acetic acid is obtained. These constituents can be utilized as a fermentable substrate suitable for growing feed yeasts. The paper contains details of yields of fermentable components as well as single cell protein (SCP) obtained during laboratory and pilot plant trails. Corrosion characteristics of some stainless steels under the harsh hydrolysis conditions, as well as the production of furfural which is a degradation product of xylose that inhibits yeast growth, are considered.
