Main objectives of this thesis are to study the existing situation of production and marketing of soybeans and to built econometric models of the supply response of soybeans in Chiang Mai, Phrae, Sukhothai, Kamphaeng Phet and the Northern region. The study was conducted using time serial data during 1977-1994. The factors affecting soybean planted area in the current year are lagged planted area of soybeans, lagged farm price of soybeans and lagged farm prices of substitute crops. For Phrae, Sukhothai and the Northern region, Corn is the major substitute crop. Mungbeans are the major substitute crop with soybeans in Chiang Mai. Cassava is the major substitute crop with soybeans in Kamphaeng Phet. The factors affecting yield of soybeans in the Northern region, Chiang Mai and Phrae are the lagged farm price of soybeans, the amount of rainfall in the current year, the current price of fertilizer and government policy. For Sukhothai, yield of soybeans dependes on the lagged farm price of soybeans and government policy. Finally, the factors affecting yield of soybeans in Kamphaeng Phet are the lagged farm price of soybeans, the current price of fertilizer and government policy. From the study it is suggested that price policy could be introduced to alter soybean production area and to increase production yield to certain extent.
