Triple effect with MVR-flash effect evaporator arrangement for energy saving and steam economy

Consumption of steam in process is a limiting factor in reducing the overall steam demand in a sugar plant. Sugar factories employ various evaporator and vapor bleeding arrangements to minimize process steam consumption. An accepted concept is to increase the number of effects in a multiple effect evaporation system to achieve steam economy. In a cane sugar plant, a quintuple arrangement with vapor bleeding from second effect to vacuum pans and from other effects to juice heaters is considered very efficient and results in a process steam consumption of about 410 to 420 kg per ton cane. The paper describes a simple and unique Triple Effect with Mechanical Vapor Recompressor (MVR) Flash Effect combination for reducing the process steam consumption to 380 to 390 kg per ton cane in spite of a fewer number of effects. To a practicing technologist, the system is convenient to operate, energy efficient, requires minimum maintenance and is cost-effective.
