Conservation and domestication of native vegetables

Introduced vegetables from temperate regions for growing in Thailand has led to the use of insect-pest control chemicals. The chemical residues is harmful to consummers and environments. People lose their chance to obtain various nutrients from wide variation of native vegetables. The project on conservation and domestication of native vegetables has conserved up to 106 species covered 44 families of edible plants at Kampaengsaen campus, Kasetsart University. The multiplication techniques for cultivating Melientha suavis was most efficient by means of sexual propagation. The Melientha tree needs some degree of shade from a companion plant, coconut shade was observed to be suitable Side by side, studies on domestication of Amaranthus species were undertaken, and found that there were wide variations in stem, leaf, flower characters as well as growth habits among species. The variations is helpful for further selections.
