From length and width measurements of photosynthetically active leaves of the sugarcane variety B 7274, leaf area was calculated by three different methods. Stalk number, length, diameter and volume of all plants within the same experimental plot were determined. Data were grouped in different ways and the Bartlett test was applied in all cases to verify variance homogeneity. From population variance and the number of samples, a logarithmic equation was estimated which allowed to determine the sample number giving the maximum curvature. A computer program was elaborated for sample size estimation utilizing all possible data grouping and comparing them two by two at random. This analysis was repeated for 13 varieties at 10 different ages in plant cane, grouping data according to variety or age. A sample size of between 10 and 20 plants per plot is proposed for both cases.
