Field case of arsenic (3-nitro-4-hydroxyphenyl arsonic acid) poisioning in breeder pigs

Roxarsone (3-nitro-4-hydroxyphenylarsonic acid) poisoning in breeder pigs was described. The affected pigs were accidentally poisoned with a high dosage of the organic arsenical compound amount to 1,000 ppm for 15 days. The affected pigs exhibit signs; anorexia, depression, mild fever, and nervous symptoms eg. paralysis, or paresis of hind limbs, coma and death. Upon necropsy, there were acute catarrhal cystitis, liver and meningeal congestion, lung edema and hydro-pericardium. Histopathologically, there were hepatic congestion and centrilobular fatty degeneration, renal tubular cell degeneration, and demyelination of spinal cord and nerve fiber especially the optic nerve. Blood chemistry analysis revealed SGOT = 36.56+-15.16 IU, SGPT = 14.01+-6.67 IU, BUN = 13.62+-5.96 mg percent and creatinine = 2.12+-0.41 mg percent. Furthermore, the arsenical content levels in liver, kidney, heart and muscle were 0.48, 0.75, 0.71 and 0.19 mg/kg, respectively.
