Pedigree selection, beginning from F2 and F3 generations of mungbean, was practiced based on 1,000 seed weight from rainy season of 1986. The selected F7 and F8 lines were tested in the dry season of 1989 under 2 environments, namely Suwan Farm, Pak Chong District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province and Kasetsart University, Kamphaeng Saen Campus. The statistical design was a 7*7 double lattice comprising 23 lines each of F7 and F8 plus 3 check cultivars. It was found that the F7-lines derived from the F2' and the F8-lines derived from the F3's displayed no difference in seed yield, 1,000 seed weight, number of seeds per pod ,and number of pods per plant. This indicated that there was no variation in yield and yield components between F7 and F8 line groups. Variation between lines within group was high in this characters, except for number of pods per plant the F8-line group. The variation between selected lines was due mainly to the difference between lines of crosses rather than the starting generations. However, the starting generations might affect selection of some particular crosses. Consequently, the final selected lines may express variation in some traits due to the selected crosses. The selected F-7 lines were shorter in plant height and days to maturity as compared to the F8-lines . The results also suggested that selection in mungbean lines of similar genotypes should be practiced beginning in the F2-generation to save the cost of labor, land and others by discarding a number of lines in earlier generations. This can be done without error from genetic instability of the F2-genotypes or segregation in the succeeding generations. Correlation study using the dry season data indicated positive association between yield and all major yield components, namely 1,000 seed weight , number of seeds per pod and number of pods per plant. Thus these characters should be considered together in selection for high yielding mungbean lines.
