Mud crab (Sctylla serrata Forskal) fattening

Study on mud crab (Scylla serrata Forskal) fattening was conducted during January-February 1990 in the earthen ponds of Surat Thani Coastal Aquaculture Development Center and the local farms in Kanchanadit District, Surat Thani Province. Two groups of the post moult mud crab (depending on the size range) were generally maintained in the earthen ponds for 20-30 days. They were fed with trash fish and horse mussel of about 7-10 percent and 40 percent of the total body weight, respectively. There were two varieties, dark and white, being on trial in each group. The average size of the first group or so called "middle size" were 11.87 cm and 456.69 g for male and 10.84 cm and 241.65 g for female of dark variety while the size of white variety were 12.68 cm and 497.61 g for male, and 12.82 cm and 385.92 g for female. The second group or so called "large size" were 12.35 cm and 519.94 g for male, and 11.20 cm and 269.49 g for female of dark veriety while the size of white variety were 13.35 cm and 589.52 g for male, and 12.81 cm and 387.85 g for female. The average catching rate was 85.20 percent in term of number and the rate of the production output was 93.77 percent in term of weight.
