Cost of production of Cryptolaemus montrouzieri Mulsant and Symnus coccivora Aiyar (Coccinellidae: Coleoptera) in Trinidad along with their rearing protocols

Studies conducted on cost of production of the Australian Ladybird, Cryptolaemus montrouzieri Mulsant, and the Indian Ladybird, Scymnus coccivora Aiyar, fed on Hibiscus Mealybug, Maconellicoccus hirsutus (Green) revealed that the predators could be successfully mass produced. The cost of production of C. montrouzieri and S. coccivora per adult averaged TT$0.28 and TT$0.92 respectively. The rearing protocols of these predators are also discussed. The use of 2 percent bleach solution for sterilization of glassware and buckets and the dusting of sulphur helped in reducing mite contamination. Seventy percent alcohol, petroleum jelly and soapy water were used to contain the high population of high population of Hibiscus Mealybug existing in the laboratory. Finally, kerosene was used in the daily incineration of all waste material removed after routine maintenance of the lab cultures.
