Incidence and treatment of the Hibiscus Mealybug Maconellicoccus hirsutus (Green) in Trinidad (August 1995 - February 1996)

The Hibiscus Mealybug was found at several locations in five counties in Trinidad: St. George, Caroni, Victoria, Mayaro and St. Patrick. Initially, management recommendations included a combination of chemical and cultural treatments. Spraying, using insecticides recommended by the Ministry of Agriculture, was the commonest treatment. Recommended cultural practices, involving a combination of cutting and burning of infested materials, were undertaken in less than 35 percent of the cases. Although the pest had reportedly been contained at some locations in counties Victoria and Mayaro, there is now evidence of resurgence and spread of new locations in these counties and to other counties.
