Serological survey of pseudorabies virus in Peruvian swine population: Preliminary findings

Prevalence studies on Aujeszky's disease (pseudorabies) have been undertaken in the Peruvian swine population. A total of 535 sows from seven well managed farms located in the coast, and 150 sows from poorly managed traditional small farms located in the jungle (n=75) and highland (n=75) regions were tested utilizing virus neutralization and a commercial ELISA Kit. Although no seroreactors were found in the samples from well managed farms, 4 percent (3/75) of the highland and 17 percent (13/75) of the jungle sows reacted to both test. Neutralizing antibody titers ranged from 1:2 to 1:64 and there was a significant correlation of sensitivity and specificity between both test (p0.01). This preliminary survey suggests that porcine herpesvirus infections in Peru is related to poor management practice, occurring principally among extensively reared animals which may be in contact with wildlife.
