Abundance and distribution of fish larvae in the southern part of Andaman Sea

Objectives of this study were to find out diversity, abundance and distribution patterns of fish larvae in the southern part of Andaman Sea from Phuket to Satun Province during December, 1992 and April 1993. Samples were obtained from 35 stations (from 5 cruises) using larvae net of 1,000 micron mesh size. Temperature and salinity of each station were recorded at the same time. Fifty-nine families of fish larvae were observed in this study. The abundance of fish larvae were from Carangidae, Engraulidae and Scombridae families. The greatest number of specimens obtained was Carangidae (14.04 percent). Engraulidae and Scombridae were ranked the second (about 11.40 percent) and the third (about 9.98 percent), respectively. Most larvae were identified and illustrated at family level. These larvae were abundance from Ko Rok to Adang-Rawi Archipelago in the southern part of Thailand in January, February and April. Temporal distribution of the economically important species in the study were as follows. Family Carangidae, Sphyraenidae and Sillaginidae were the most abundance in December. Family Engraulidae, Clupeidae and Leiognathidae were found in greatest number in February while Family Scombridae and Nemipteridae were abundant in April. Spacialwise, distributions family Engraulidae and Sillaginidae were distributed only in shallow water while Carangidae and Leiognathidae were distributed in deeper water. Family Scombridae, however, distributed in broader area from shallow water to around midwater. All fish larvae had some relationships with environmental factors but they were not clearly shown statistically significance (p 0.05).
