Replacement of fish meal by alternative protein sources in rainbow trout diets

Utilization of some alternative protein sources, defatted soybean meal (SBM), corn gluten meal (CGM) and meat meal (MM), as partial replacement of fish meal was studied with rainbow trout of about 3 g in body weight. The combination of these protein meals was used to replace 55, 64, 73, 82 and 91 percent of fish meal in the control diet containing 40 percent protein. Duplicate tanks of fish were fed to satiation at 15 deg C for 86 days. Fish fed all the SBM, CGM and MM combination diets exhibited the good growth rate, feed efficiency and a voluntary food intake that were comparable to the control group. Although PER values of the experimental diets containing alternative protein sources were lower than the control, there was no marked difference in the protein and energy retention except in the diet in which 91 percent fish meal was replaced. All the test proteins were well digested, assimilation values ranging from 91 percent to 93 percent. Hepatosomatic index and chemical composition of whole body did not vary significantly from the control group. The results indicate that about 90 percent of fish meal could be replaced by the mixture of different levels of SBM, CGM and MM, if their combined amino acid patterns were comparable to the fish meal diet.
