In two field experiments were conducted at Suphan Buri and Rayong field crops research center in 1995 determine the optimum period and rate of ethephon application to inhibit flowering of cane crop. The results of both Suphan Buri and Rayong Field Crops Research Center showed that the ethephon application inhibited flowering of U-Thong 2 sugarcane cultivar. At Suphan Buri FCRC, ethephon application rate of 960 g a.i./ha significant lower number of flowering stalk than ethephon at 480 g a.i./ha. Whereas, at Rayong FCRC there was no significant number of flowering stalk difference between two ethephon application rate. The suitable time of ethephon application was for prevention of flowering in mid-July at Suphan Buri FCRC, whereas at Rayong FCRC was in late August for rate of 480 g a.i./ha and in mid-August for rate of 960 g a.i./ha. Cane yield and sugar content were not significantly affected by using ethephon. However, at Suphan Buri FCRC cane yield was reduced about 18 t/ha when ethephon application rate increased from 480 g a.i./ha to 960 g a.i./ha. Ethephon at 960 g a.i./ha should be applied in mid-August. Because at this time, cane weightwas reduced less than the others time. This experiment will be confirmed in the ratoon crop.
