PEARS clinical cases have not been diagnosed up to now in Mexico. Nevertheless it is important to know the PEARS serological situation in our pig population, specially in the farms which import pigs and in their native pig population being in contact with them. In order to know if we have imported pigs positive to PEARS antibodies and if our native pigs being in contact with them are also positive to PEARS antibodies, the pigs from 9 different states were bled. The sampling size was calculated considering finding at least one positive pig with a confidence level of 95 percent and a hypothetic prevalence of 1 percent. The sampled native pig population was stratified according to the age, in: adults, growing pigs and suckling pigs; 491 pigs located in 31 pig farms were sampled, and their sera were studied by the indirect immunofluorescence test for the detection of PEARS antibodies, using microplates provided by the N.V.S.L., U.S.D.A. Eight farms had PEARS positive sera, and they were from Sonora (4 farms), Jalisco (2), Aguascalientes (1), and Guanajuato (1); and sera from one farm from Sonora and another one from Guanajuato were weakly positive. From the total of 491 serum samples, 40 (8.14 percent) were positive; 200 of then came from adult imported sows with 18 (9 percent) positive; and 291 were from native pigs, which had been in contact with the imported pigs, corresponding to 22 (7.56 percent) positive sera; 1.02 percent of these were from sucklings, 1.63 percent from growing pigs and 1.83 percent from adult native pigs.
