Moisture adsorption characteristics of rough rice

Thin layer rewetting equations were developed for rough rice. Experiments were carried out under dynamic conditions at different combinations of air temperature-relative humidity-grain initial moisture content. Temperatures ranged from 30 deg C to 45 deg C, while the relative humidities ranged from 70 % to 95 %. The initial moisture contents of the grain varied from 9 % wb to 15 % wb. Various models were fitted to the experimental data and the best fitting model was selected. Modified exponential model, also called as Page's model was found as the best to fit the overall range of data. A computer simulation program was developed to simulate the grain rewetting, after adding the rewetting equation to the program. The simulation estimated the moisture profile in a bed of rough rice reasonably well. The estimated values were found to be well within the practical range. Another approach of direct estimation of moisture profile from the rewetting equation was tried and found to be equally well, if not better, than the computer simulation. Added advantage with this method is the considerable saving of time as it does not have to go through the iterative process like the computer simulation.
