Management of acid tropical soils in Southeast Asia

Ultisols and Oxisols account for over 50 percent of the total land area in Southeast Asia. These soils are acidic, high in iron and aluminum, and low in fertility. Clearing these areas for agriculture may lead to rapid leaching and erosion losses, especially under the intense rainfall that occurs in most locations. This review indicates that phosphorus is a major nutrient limitation. Appropriate use of lime, phosphate, and cultural practices leads to relatively high and sustained crop yields. Tree-crop agriculture is found to be very successful. Management systems not only sustain but also improve soil productivity. The paper also briefly identifies future research needs.
