Response of groundnut to sludge application

Field experiment was conducted on sandy clay loam at Mae Hia Research Station and Training Center, Faculty of Agriculture, Chiang Mai University in 1992 rainy season to investigate the effect of sludge on growth and yield of groundnut cultivar Tainan 9 compared with recommended chemical fertilizer. A randomized complete block design was used with four replications of four rates of sludge (1,000-4,000 kg/rai) and recommended chemical fertilizer rate (3-9-6 kg/rai). The results revealed that dry pod yields were significantly increased by all rates of sludge as well as recommended chemical fertilizer rate about 17-23 percent. The pronounced increase in dry pod yields due to the increased in number of pods per hill and 100-seed weight. It was also found that shelling percentage and harvest index were the same trend as pod yields. The low harvest index of control treatment was attributable to low source. Thus, the assimilate produced was not enough to supply the seed sink. Furthermore, shoot dry matter and leaf area indexes were markedly reduced in control treatment in all stage except at 30 days after planting. In conclusion, the of using sludge as fertilizer in groundnut cultivation with the rates of 3,000-4,000 kg/rai would be adequate to maintain satisfactory yield as chemical fertilizer rate.
