[Moss adaptation to the toxic influence of the heavy metals]

The problem of heavy metal accumulation in mosses is studied and their reaction to the metals' toxic action, including physiological and biochemical, metabolic and growth processes. Levels of the accumulation of the heavy metals by various moss species are analyzed and a new cytochemical method to reveal them in the plants is proposed. The dynamics of moss gametophyte resistance during the ontogeny is examined. The heavy metals are revealed to have some stimulative effect on the electrophoretic spectra of proteins and enzymes. Changes in the activity of the respiratory enzyme systems as well as in the character of the metabolism in moss cells under heavy metals influence are studied
