Using water culture, we studied the effects of different cadmium concentrations (0, 1, 100 microM) on the levels of chloroplast pigments, chlorophyll stability, cadmium (Cd) accumulation, and the ratio of leaf area to plant mass, or leaf area ratio (LAR). The results showed that increasing Cd concentrations decreased chlorophyll and carotenoid contents and chlorophyll stability and increased root Cd content, Cd levels in the above-ground plant parts, and LAR. They have also shown that Cd accumulation is considerably greater in the root than in the leaves as well as that the photosynthesizing apparatus is particularly sensitive to increased Cd concentrations and that in such cases the mass of the above-ground plant parts is reduced more that the leaf area.
