The paper highlights the importance of soil as a natural resource necessary for the survival of the animate world on this planet, and the ecological problems and adverse consequences resulting from soil degradation. A review of the different soil types present in F.R. Yugoslavia includes a description of their role in the production of quality food. Soil degradation as a result of human actions leading to an imbalance of pedogenetic factors is also discussed. Finally, the paper presents voluminous results of the studies of soil status in Yugoslavia. These results show that the analyzed soils still possess the quality necessary for the production of food which meets the highest standards.
