Ten varieties of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), grown under identical environmental conditions, were assessed on the basis of phytotechnical performance, physico-chemical characteristics and metabolisable energy, incl. the response to carb(NSP)enzymes, for broiler chicks. The 1997-growing season was characterized by variable climatic conditions with some adverse effects on disease load, grain yield and lower values for hectoliter weight and kernel weight. The variation for most nutrients was within the normal range with averages of e.g. 10.4/ for total NSP and 6.1/ for total arabinoxylans. Grain yield was not correlated with either starch or protein. The average MEn-value of wheat was 11.4 MJ per kg with a range of 8.2/. The addition of enzymes resulted in average MEn-increase of 5.9(1.9-9.6)/: this /-increase was inversely related to the MEn-value. The average MEn equivalency of the enzyme preparation was 670(226-1086) MJ per kg. There was a tendency for either a positive or negative correlation between the bio-efficacy of enzymes and hectoliter weight or total arabinoxylan-content respectively. There were also 2 significant side-effects of enzymes in terms of a reduced excreta/feed-ratio and an enhanced N-retention.
