Topping and sucker control are essential techniques in the cultivation of tobacco. In Belgium these techniques are still very labourintensive, in contrast to the situation abroad. This is for a great deal due to the type of chemicals that are available in Belgium: only the oils are authorized for this application. The oils need to be applied plant per plant. On the international market there is a range of chemicals for sucker control that can be applicated by sprayer. Het Provinciaal Onderzoeks- en Voorlichtingscentrum voor Land- en Tuinbouw has tested some possible alternative chemicals for sucker control in the variety Filippijn. This is the most cultivated variety in Belgium. The experiment shows that the fatty alcohols have enough potential to become an alternative for the present sucker control technique: they can be sprayed and are effective in controlling the primaire and secundaire suckers. There is a good chance for authorisation of these products for this kind of application in Belgium.
