Number of chemical and microbiological methods was tested and used for the assessment of soil quality in different natural sites, field expriments and in pot experiments with artificially contaminated soils, as well. A survey of microbiological methods that are routinely used in our laboratory for the bio-indication of the degree of soil pollution has been presented. Some of them have been widely used for a long time (plate dilution technique, biomass determination by fumigation - extraction method, basal and potential respiration, nitrification or dehydrogenase activity), some of them are relatively new and proved to be very sensitive in our previous studies. These include pad technique to determine the proportion of sensitive and resistant micro-organisms to a certain pollutant in different soil samples, composition of the microbial community (slow and fast growing micro-organisms) or potential nitrogenase activity in soil samples amended with glucose.
