Occurrence of babesiosis in dogs in West Slovakia

Three cases of clinical canine babesiosis were diagnosed in the Slovak Republic in early autumn 2000. The presence of Babesia sp. in erythrocytes was confirmed by microscopic examination of blood smears. The apparent vector of the infection was the tick Dermacentor reticulatus. The occurrence of babesiosis in western Slovakia is supported by favourable climatic conditions.
