Problems associated with the diagnostics of actinobacillar porcine pleuropneumonia in affected swine herds are treated. The possibilities of identification of homologous and heterologous serotypes by slow and rapid agglutination, indirect haemagglutination, and immunodiffusion tests and coagglutination reaction are critically assessed. The suitability of specific DNA demonstration in lung tissue by in situ hybridisation, various modifications of PCR, and ribotyping for the application in routine diagnostics are discussed. Particular attention is paid to advanced methods of serotype identification by the latex agglutination test and to the immunomagnetic method of selective isolation of the causative agent from tonsils as a prospective method for the detection of carriers.
