There were 340,300 sheep in Slovakia by January 2000. Only 0.5 % of dairy ewes were machine milked. EU quotas in terms of slaughter production are fulfilled only partly. The main goal by 2005 is to increase the export of sheep products, especially slaughter lambs. Other goals are: to achieve the fertility of 120-130 %, to enhance the cheese production per 1 dairy ewe up to 21-23 kg, to reach 400-500 thousand of sheep, to milk 25 % of dairy ewes by machine, to increase pasture utilising by making fences and by fattening lambs on pastures. Sheep husbandry will thus provide more jobs in rural areas with marginal conditions.
