Presented paper documents the results of soil research in an altitudian transect on the Plechy (1020-1370 m a.s.l.). Soil samples were taken from localities forming this transect and basic pedochemical characteristics were established. Results reveal narrow relation between the position of soils in the altitudinal transect and their characteristics: an increasing extremity and decreasing level of pedochemistry, icrease of the acidity and decrease of the nutrient content. In higher altitudes, soil chemistry reached an extreme level - especially very low pH. Soils have still a considerable regeneration potential, but their chemistry begins to be quit extreme. Regeneration of forest ecosystems can be limited by the unfavourable soil state, especially in the case of tree layer decline.
