An outline of possible interactions between fungi and bacteria from the phytopathological viewpoint is presented. We placed great emphasis on the use of bacteria as biological control agents. Bacteria in numerous genera have been implicated as potential biocontrol agents, but there is no evidence to suggest that one group (e.g., Pseudomonas species) is more important than another. Plant pathologists have largely ignored the systematics and role of plant-associated, saprophytic microorganisms in plant growth and plant health. To understand rhizosphere and phyllosphere dynamics interactions between pathogens and saprophytes, it is essential to have much knowledge of the activities of saprophytic microflora as exists for the pathogens.
