The author explains the history of the disease of cattle and similar disease of man. He informs on prions, the causal agents of BSE, on the development of the disease in cattle, on diagnosis and possible prevention. The author discusses the danger of transmission of BSE to man, in particular the "new variant" of Creutzfeldt-Jacob's disease.
