Extensive investigations of iodine status in cows were carried out in several regions of the Czech Republic in 1982-1999. Natural iodine intake was completed by iodine-containing mineral supplements and absorption of iodine from mammary gland disinfectants in the period 1982-1994. At that time, mean iodine content in the milk was 53.9 +/- 22.3 microg/L. A marked decrease to 28.4 +/- 10.9 microg/L was observed in the subsequent period (1995-1996) when the consumption of mineral supplements was reduced and their composition changed. At the same time, the proportion of cabbage and rapeseed products in the rations were increased. The iodine content in mineral supplements was increased to 15-150 mg per kg from 1997 and this change was associated with an increase in mean iodine concentration in the milk to 128.7 +/- 53 microg/L. This change was not uniform in all the regions under study.
