The parent material for soils at Jogeva PBI is calcareous yellowish-brown moraine. There are four types of soils in the experimental fields of Jogeva PBI: Molli-Endoeutric Cambisol (KO), Endoeutri-Lamellic Luvisol (KI), Umbri-Gleiyc Albeluvisol (LkIIg) and Endostagni-Haplic Albeluvisol (LPg). The soils at Jogeva PBI generally have a humus horizon over 30 cm thick. In the A-horizon the humus content is 2-3 per cent. The texture of humus horizon may be classified as sandy loam. The reaction of the humus horizon varies from neutral to slightly acid. The phosphorus content of soils is very high or high (low only in Umbric-Gleyic Albeluvisol) and the potassium content are high or medium. Field and laboratory analyse indicated that soils of Jogeva PBI are suitable for use in plant breeding research
