Possible uses of digital soil maps in agriculture

Surveys of agricultural and forest soils with scales 1:10 000 have been undertaken in Estonia since the 1950s - 1980s. Detailed soilmaps with the scale 1:10 000 have been made for the whole Estonia. Digitized map was composed from July 1997 to March 2001. Possible use of digital soil maps is very variegated. For example, they can be of great significance in environmental protection and in agriculture in general. Soil maps help us to protect the best agricultural soils and important ecological reserves. To ensure all that, we must promote and teach how and for what those maps can be used. For ensuring sustainable development it is surely essential to have the sound knowledge of soils and its properties, particularly when changing to new land uses
