Determination of the number of piglets per litter considered as desirable in terms of rearing is one of the important current issues of the breeding practice.Due to the constraint of the intrauterine development the high litter size will indirectly influence the weaning weight through the individual birth weight of piglets and directly as a consequence of the contest for food in the suckling period.Based on data of 2660 farrowings of 768 meat type Hungarian Large White sows, these correllations were analyzed in our work. The results show that the average birth weight of 1.6 kg is the condition to realize the piglet death of 10% or under 10% accepted in the breeding practice, provided that the sow farrows not more than 10-11 living piglets.
