Evaluation of control measures against ascariosis on a large-scale pig farm

Farkas,R. | Pribenszky,C.
The main causes of liver losses caused by Ascaris suum larvae on a large-scale pig farm with 1600 sows, were investigated.Parasitological results of 133 faecal samples, prevalance of liver damage and the number of Ascaris adults found in the intestines of 101 slaughtered pigs were evaluated, together with the local methods of anthelmintic treatments with albendazole were not effective enough. It was recommended that this anthelmintic be used as a feed additive for at least two-three days or longer instead of one day.It was revealed that the liver losses of finishing pigs originated from their roundworm infection in fattening units. For this reason, the main emphasis should be on preventing infection because albendazole cannot kill infective larvae before thay reach the liver.Contrary to the local practise, it was also recommended to treat the pregnant sows before taking them to the farrowing accommodation.
