Comparison of the energy utilization of various poultry species

Metabolisable energy content and nutrient digestibilities of four different diets were determined using broiler chicks, turkeys, ducks, geese, pheasants, quils, guinea-fowls and pigeons. Beside a basal diet, high protein, high energy and high fibre diets, containing titanium oxide as a marker were fed. In the average of the four diets pheasants showed the best energy utilization, which exceeded significantly those of pigeons, turkeys, ducks and geese. Feeding diets with different nutrient content did not have a big influence on the above mentioned average values. Fat digestibilities ranged between 61 (ducks) and 80% (pheasants), while those for nitrogen free extract between 84 (turkey) and 96% (pheasants). From the results it can be concluded, that using species specific tables would improve mostly the nutrition of turkeys, ducks and geese.
