A study of nutritional profile of pre-school children living in urban slums of ludhiana city

A nutritional survey was conducted on 76 pre-school children aged 1 to 4 years belonging to low income families of urban slum areas of Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, Atam Nagar and Haibowal areas of Ludhiana city. The consumption of cereals, pulses, milk and milk products and leafy vegetables was grossly inadequate. The adequacy of energy and protein in both the groups (1-3 and 3-4 years) was 55 and 48 per cent and 52 and 54 per cent respectively. The intake of all the vitamins was inadequate as compared to RDA. Adequacy of iron intake in both the groups was only 20 per cent. Height, weight and triceps skinfold were below the standards whereas mid-upper arm circumference compared well with the standards. Pale conjunctiva and spoon shaped nails were observed in almost all the subjects. The average haemoglobin of the subjects was below the normal level indicating that all the subjects were anaemic.
