Gunma W 2 is a soft red wheat variety developed in 1 997 at Gunma Agricultural Experiment Station, Japan. This variety has been released as a recommended variety in Gunma Prefecture Since 1997. The cross between Kanto 100 (Bandouwase) and Kantou 107 was made in 1985. The new variety, Gunma W 2 was selected from F11 progenies by the derived line method. Main characteristics of Gunma W 2 are as fwllows. Time of maturity: two days earlier than Norin 61 which is one of the most widely cultivated varieties in the Kantou district and western part of Japan. Growth habit: degree of spring habit: II. Disease resistance: resistant to leaf rust and wheat yellow mosaic, and moderately resistant to scad, but susceptible to podery mildew. Yielding ability: similar to or slightly higher than that of Norin 61. Flour quality: protein and amylose content in gains is slightly lower than that of Norin 61, milling characteristics are higher than those of Norin 61. Noodle making quality: noodle color is better and viscoelasticity is higher than that of Norin 61. Total score of quality is the hither than that of Norin 61
