In order to produce fruits of high brix of soluble solids and low acid content in satsuma mandarin, we investigated the influence of watering for fruit quality and tree growth. 1. Tender trees(three years old) were given water-stress by mulching and culturing in high ridge-up bed from mid-August to late November. If a tree had many fruits, we could produce high brix fruits. The stronger water-stress fruits were given, the higher brix they got. However their acidity were stronger than sweets. 2. In late September, when soluble solids of fruits reached up 11 degrees Brix by mulching from late August, the mulch was removed and irrigated, then we could make high quality fruits of over 12 degrees Brix and about 1% of the titratable acidity at harvest time. The titratable acidity remarkably decreased by watering before late September, however soluble solids of fruits decreased by it before early September. 3. The later watering was on mulch from mid-August to mid-November, the higher brix and titratable acidity became. Water content of soil was decreased by mulching, however the root growth was increased. The rate of the feeder root per all root especially became higher than it of trees in open field
