Effects of sowing time, planting time planting system and hedging period on the growth, yield and quality of Chinese chive [Allium tuberosum] variety "Super Green Belt" in forcing culture

We clarified the optimum sowing and planting times in the forcing culture of a Chinese chive variety "Super Green Belt" and examined the effects of the planting system and the hedging time on the growth, yield and quality of this variety. 1) In the cropping type where harvesting was carried out from September to the next April, sowing was performed in January, February and March and, after raising, the seedlings were planted in May and June. As a result, the total yield achieved by planting the seedlings in May exceeded that achieved by planting the seedlings in June regardless of the sowing time. When the seedlings were planted in May, much total yield and stable quality were obtained by sowing in January and February, compared with the case where sowing was performed in March. 2) In the cropping type where sowing and planting were performed respectively in February and May and the crops were harvested from September to the next April, the intrarow spacing was set to 20, 25 and 30 cm and the planting density was set on 3, 6 and 9 stems per plant. As a result, the more yield could be obtained at the higher planting density in intrarow spacing. The maximum yield was achieved at the intrarow spacing of 25 cm and the planting density of 9 stems per plant. In this case, the yield was increased by about 10% compared with the conventional case where the intrarow spacing and the planting density were set respectively to 25 cm and 6 stems per plant. 3) The crop were sowed in February, planted in May and then cultured for 90, 120, 150 and 180 days. As a result, the plants cultured for 120, 150 and 180 days were superior to those cultured for 90 days in the number of root per plant and the fresh weight of dwarf stem and showed increased yield. The quality of the plants cultured for 90, and 120 days were comparable to each other, while those cultured for 180 days showed highly improved quality
