Experiments with a view to comparing cover crops and under crops were started at the Kaltinenai Experimental Station in 1997. The findings of 2 experimental years sshowed that a higher amount of green material was produced by the following cover-catch crops: spiked and legume grasses. Under their effect the yield of barley was increased, the number of weeds, especially that of couch grass was decreased. Initial findings showed that catch crops reduced the leaching of nitrate nitrogen and stopped erosion processes
