The aim of the present work is to develop a formation process of PHB composites for use as packaging materials and evaluate influence of plasticizers on physical properties of PHB and biodegradability of PHB - based films in soil. Some of PHB-based films: pure PHB, PHB containing biomass of A. chroococcum 23 (Biomass), PHB blend with 10% PEG-300 (N-4) and PHB blend with 50% laprol 5003 (Lap-5) were selected to study the process of biodegradation. The biodegradable packaging film, developed in Latvia has not been used as a food packaging material. Inhabitants were questioned to find out how many of them were informed about environmentally friendly packaging material, their attitude to food packaging in general and possible higher extra expenses related with it. Less than one fourth of inhabitants were informed of the new biodegradable food packaging material, and they were not willing to increase their expenditures for packaging.
