Tourism as a developmental factor in the rural environment

The development of rural tourism in Latvia involves a number of positive factors that have an imporant influence on the socio-economic environment of the countryside and the development of people who live there. Rural tourism did not exist during the Soviet times, which explains the fact that the process of rebirth started only in early nineties. A tourism association "Rural Traveller" was established in 1993 and the number of participating farms was only 20 in 1994. Though, in 1999 there were already 116 farms offering their services.
