Plant pathogens cause huge yield losses worldwide annually. Despite human efforts to minimize their harmful impact on crops they appear again and again. Correct diagnosis of pathogens is one of the most essential steps before making a decision of plant protection strategy. A number of different diagnostic methods for plant pathogens have been developed during last decades. Some of them are very widely used in certification programmes, whereas others are used mainly for scientific purposes. Such a novel method as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) allows detecting viruses much more precisely either in humans, animals or plants, and provide new insight into the processes concerned to molecular biology. In this review we tried to give a condense overview of the diagnostic methods developed and used for virus and viroid detection since 1920, when the first method was developed.
