Research and development work on the oil palm pollinating weevil, Elaeidobius kamerunicus since its introduction to Malaysia from Cameroon in 1980 is reviewed. The characteristics of oil palm flowers in relation to weevil activities leading to pollination and good fruit set is described. In new plantings and replantings, field experience with weevil introduction and increasing its numbers is highlighted. Also reviewed are information on weevil population dynamics under different environmental conditions, its life cycle, predation by rats, and the effect on bunch number, bunch weight and yield pattern.
