Faunal inventory of Naujan Lake National Park and its adjacent watershed, Oriental Mindoro, Philippines

Study sites representing different habitat types within Naujan Lake National Park were surveyed for their faunal composition. The study was conducted from November 6-23, 1997. Of the 98 species of wild fauna recorded, 12 species are reptiles, 5 are amphibians, 68 are birds and 13 are mammals. Among the waterbirds observed, 5 are migratory. Three threatened species recorded were the Philippine Duck (Anas luzonica), Mindoro Tarictic Hornbill (Pinelopides mindorensis) and the Mindoro Hawk-Owl (Ninox mindorensis). Several threats and problems associated with the loss or decline of wild fauna in the area have been identified. Habitat desruction like land conversion, siltation, encroachment and occupancy in the protected area and weak institutional and legal capacities such as inappropriate, conflicting and absolete policies and institutions, lack of funds and poor information and education capabilities are among the many threats that the national park faces. Naujan Lake National Park, especially its marsh area, has a great potential of becoming an internationally-protected wetland under the RAMSAR Convention and a recreational site for birdwatchers and other tourists. Conservation and management measures to protect the wetland and the wildlife therein were recommended
