Avifaunal indicators for biodiversity conservation in an archipelagic setting

The Philippines is one of the richest archipelagos in the world, both in terms of species richness and levels of endemism. However, rapid forest loss had placed much of this biodiversity in danger of extinction. A recent analysis of Birdlife International (Collar et.al. 1994) identified the Philippines as having more highly threatened bird species endemic to it than any other country in the world. The Haribon-Birdlife Program has two on-going projects designed to help develop its program for biodiversity conservation. The Philippine volume of the Asian Bird Red Data Book (RDB) (in press), will identify and fully document the globally threatened bird species which occur there. The Important Bird Areas (IBA) Project will identify and document the best sites in the Philippines for the conservation of threatened and endemic birds and other biodiversity. This will provide an important input into the ongoing National Integrated Protected Areas System process
