Varietal response of rice as influenced by seedling age and level of nitrogen fertilizer under rainfed lowland condition

Results showed that PSB Rc14, PSB Rc40, and PSB Rc62 transplanted at 20 days had shorter number of days to heading and maturity than those transplanted at 30 and 40 days. Leaf area index of the three varieties was higher when transplanted at 20 days and fertilized with level of nitrogen fertilizer (120 kg N/ha). The grain yield per hectare of the different varieties was significantly affected by seeding age and level of nitrogen fertilizer. PSB Rc14 gave the highest grain yield (4.42 t/ha) when transplanted at 20 days and fertilized with 120 kg N/ha. Its yield advantage was 9.28 and 24.21% over those plants transplanted at 30 and 40 days and applied with the same level of nitrogen fertilizer. The best yield (3.10 t/ha) of PSB Rc40 was obtained from plants fertilized with 60 kg N/ha and transplanted at 20 days. A corresponding decrease in yield by 22.90% was observed when transplanting was delayed. For PSB Rc62, the highest yield was obtained from plants transplanted at 20 days and applied with 90 kg N/ha (3.86 t/ha). A 23.83% yield decrease was observed from plants transplanted at 40 days using the same level of nitrogen fertilizer. Yield from plants transplanted at 30 days and applied with 90 kg N/ha was comparable with those transplanted at 20 days and applied with the same level of nitrogen fertilizer. Pest and disease incidence were observed when transplanting was delayed by 30 to 40 days. There was also a significant increase on the damage caused by pests and diseases when nitrogen fertilizer was applied
