Flowering synchronization of hybrid parental lines based on the leaf number method

In China, the leaf number method, where sowing of the male and female parents is based on the emergenCe of a predetermined number of leaves, has been used to improve flowering synchronization in hybrid seed production. To determine the usefulness of the leaf number method for synchronizing the flowering of some hybrid parental lines at PhilRice, the leaf number of 10 cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS) and their respective maintainer (B) lines wer characterized under greenhouse conditions during the 1998 wet season. Leaf counting started when the first complete leaf emerged on the main culm using the following criteria: 0.1 when the leaf was just needle-like in shape; 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 and 1.0 when leaf length increased by about 33, 50, 67, and 100% of the farmer, respectively; and 1.0 when the leaf expanded completely. The suitable time for seeding the B lines was when the leaf number of their corresponding CMS line reached 0.9 for PRI, IR58025, Bo, IR68886 and IR72079, 1.0 for Lian, 1.1 for IR68901, 1.3 for IR68897, 1.4 for Jinante, and 1.5 for PR2. Based on these criteria, good flowering synchronization was achieved during the 1999 wet season
