1999
Wang Kanglin
More than 100 species, varieties and forms of bamboo that belong to 18 genera have been identified and inventoried in this study. Of these, the genera Dendrocalamus and Gigantochloa were found to possess greater diversity than the other taxa. Some important genera and species have also been described together with a useful field guide for each genus. The relationship of bamboo distribition between Xishuangbanna and South-East Asian countries is close than Xishuangbanna with other neighboring areas. Bamboo resources in Xishuangbanna do not only exhibit species diversity, but also posses the vegetative type diversity which has tremendous significance on the social, ecological and economic status of the areas. The indigenous knowledge systems on the classification, utilization, management and conservation of bamboo resources are described and discussed. The indigenous knowledge systems form an important individual component of local society and provide foundation for sustainable development and effective conservation. Significantly nine bamboo species have been identified as priority species for future exploitation. Suggestions for future research and development are presented
